New Meetup: Bay Farm Island Walk

From: Mike
Sent on: Monday, July 26, 2010 1:12 PM
Announcing a new Meetup for East Bay Walkers!

This is really more of a hike, although there are no hills to worry about and the path is entirely paved.

We'll meet in Alameda and walk across a bridge to Bay Farm Island. Then the walk will take us around the Shoreline Park path with beautiful views of the Alameda shoreline and San Francisco. After about 2 miles or so, we'll turn into one of the canal paths that run through the center of Bay Farm Island. They're tree-lined paved paths that follow the canals through the rear of housing developments. This area is also a bird sanctuary with black-crowned night herons, great egrets and snowy egrets, coots, cormorants, and canvasback, bufflehead and mallard ducks.

As with any walk along the Bay, plan on cooler weather (or not). The walk along the Shorline Park will be breezier than the walk through the center of the island.

We'll stop for lunch at La Pinata Restaurant on Island Drive (a mile or so from the end of the walk), so please make sure you bring lunch money with you on the walk since we won't be going back to the cars first.

TIME: 10:00 a.m.

DATE: Saturday, 8/21/10

MEETING LOCATION: 3300 Bridgeview Isle, Alameda, CA, 94501 (a parking lot for a small waterfront park).

PARKING: Free parking.

WALKING CONDITIONS: Flat and level paved walkways. Distance is about 5 miles (not exactly sure as the walk is along paths not roadways). The walk should take about 1.5 to 2.0 hours.
