A Walk Around the 2 Mosaic Stairways (North of West Portal)

Details

Now open for RSVPs. Free walk. This is the 2nd time we do this walk since it was improved by the opening of the new "Hidden Garden Steps" giving us 2 Mosaic Stairways instead of one. This is one of our most popular walks and it is our most inspirational walk. We meet in front of a Starbucks, that has 2 restrooms, about 1 block West of the West Portal Muni Station, cross street is Vicente. One can take the K, L, or M lines to reach the station. Remember to either bring a sack lunch or buy one at our starting point. At 11:10 AM or later we will walk.

We will walk through the wonderful Forest Hill neighborhood over many stairways including the giant Pacheco Grand Staircase. For years we ate our sack lunches inside the Botanical Gardens in Golden Gate Park. On August 7th, 2010, the SF Board of Supervisors started charging $7 for non-residents to enter. So we are forced to eat our lunches in another part of the G. G. Park. I will work to end the fees in the coming months.

Then we walk South to and up the "Hidden Gardens Steps" and the "Mosaic Stairway," the only 2 in the City and decorated by hundreds of neighbors. They are the most inspirational thing I ever saw. An ordinary neighborhood got together and did something world spectacular! Maybe every community can together do something spectacular. Then up to the top of Grand View Park, elevation 666', to see incredible views. Then we walk South taking a different route back through Forest Hill to our starting point. Hopefully arriving at 4:00 PM.

I try to discourage people from driving to SF, but if you need to drive there is plenty of available free street parking in nearby St. Francis Wood neighborhood during the weekends.
