Bernal Heights Walk via 2 BART Stations

Now open for RSVPs. The only cost is $3 cash per adult. This walk is like our "Mount Olympus + 4 More Walk" in that it goes to a scenic part of SF that not many people ever visit. Again we boldly go where no tourist has ever gone.

We will gather at 1 PM in front of Muddy's Coffee House near the corner of Valencia & 24th Street which is close to SF's 24th Street BART Station in the Mission District. There is one tiny restroom inside of Muddy's Coffee House and also the Mission District Branch Library which is half way between the 24th Street BART Station and Muddy's.

Attendees should eat their lunch before this walk as we will not stop for lunch.

At 1:10 PM we will walk from Muddy's to St. Lukes Hospital, at the corner of Valencia & Cesar Chavez Street, as our big restroom stop. Then we will walk around Bernal Heights in a clockwise direction. Then we walk up to the top of Bernal Hill. Then we walk quickly down to the Bernal Heights Branch Library. Then we walk back half way up Bernal Hill. Then we walk down garden stairways including one equipped with a giant slide.

We then continue through garden stairways and mini parks to the Holly Park. Then we walk South/West to the Glen Park Library which will be our endpoint which is less than one block from the BART station. Estimated ending time:  5:00 PM.

Thank you so much to whoever posted the GPS tracking of the route - FASCINATING to see what we actually did! Another great exploration of my favorite city's nooks and crannies - thanks again Howard!

I brought along a pair of shearers just incase no one had cut back the plant growth blocking one of the stairways. Sure enough I had to use the shearers to get us through, but cutting took less than 5 minutes. Though this walk is of average length for our walks, 5 to 6 miles, it is a hard one because of walking up and down a lot. Less than half of our attendees made it to the endpoint where we arrived at 5:15 PM.

I left the group after we got to the top of Bernal Hill and made my way down back to my close by apartment. Also, this morning I retraced our steps from Muddy's to St. Luke's and found my yellow jacket! Yay :)

    Which age should we have

    September 13, 2014

    • Howard S.

There is no age, race, or nationality prohibition. We have people of all ages. One just has to be in average physical condition to be able to do the walks.

Does anyone know if it is difficult to find bart parking at Glen Park on Sat around 1ish? I believe it is only $2 to park there.

    • Howard S.

We are not starting at Glen Park. We are ending there. We start a block or 2 from the 24th Street BART Station at 1 PM.

I'm hoping my sister and her husband, who live in Bernal Heights, will be able to join me for this hike.

Carpooling in Meetup is much more dangerous than it looks. To new members especially it looks like everybody knows everybody in Meetup when the reality is the opposite. Both, the organizers & do not know who the members are. 80% of my members have not shown up to even one of my events. Members post fake photos, fake names, fake everything. Meetup is just as dangerous as Craigs List where people were robbed, raped & murdered. The only difference is Craigs List is bigger.

Can I park all afternoon in the neighborhood? I cannot take Bart as I live in San Francisco where public transport is difficult.

    September 8, 2014

    • Howard S.

It is possible to park all afternoon in that neighborhood, but you will probably have to search for a long time to find a parking space and you might not find one. I don't understand not being able to take public transport inside of SF unless one lives in a dangerous neighborhood. There is an extensive bus system inside SF. One way to find out how to take public transport is to go The Trip Planner and the link is below.
