The Bay Model and Other Sausalito Sites Walk

Now open for RSVPs. Bring a sack lunch. Cost of walk is $2 per adult & kids free. The Bay Model, bigger than 2 football fields, is an exact model of the San Francisco Bay's currents. Though it was built for scientific study it is now open, for educational purposes, FREE to the public.

If you are going with us on the ferry try and be at the Golden Gate Ferry Terminal directly behind the SF Ferry Building Clock Tower at 10:15 AM to give a margin of error so you don't miss the ferry when it leaves at 10:40 AM. How to find me: I am a tall man, look like my photo, wear a big green hat, and will be holding a clipboard. It is a short walk from the Embarcadero BART Station to the Ferry Building.

After you buy a ticket and enter the ticket terminal you can find our group at the right (North end). If you don't find us in the terminal you can find us in the ferry at the top deck. Now is the time to get yourself "Clipper" formerly called "Translink" and you can CUT THE COST of the ferry trip by ALMOST HALF! The adult fare is $9.75 one way. For youth (6-18), seniors (65+)/disabled Medicare or approved ID: $4.10. Clipper Card $5.00. Children under 6 are FREE.

Also, people may go to Sausalito by bus or any other way and join us in Sausalito. Our ferry is expected to arrive at Sausalito at 11:10 AM, near El Portal Street, but there is no terminal building. We will then walk to the nearby big water fountain at El Portal and Bridgeway, 11:15 AM, so that more people can join us. Then we will walk North.

If good weather we might walk to a big old house which was the hideout for notorious gangster Baby Face Nelson. We will tour the Bay Model until about 1:55 PM. People who wish to catch the 2:10 PM ferry back to SF will have to walk back by themselves as the group won't have time to get back there by then.

After visiting the Bay Model we will probably not visit Sausalito's small history museum as our group may not fit inside. Then we will explore the South side of Sausalito including what was Sally Stanford's restaurant, Valhalla which was a location in the Orson Welles movie "The Lady from Shanghai." Sally Stanford was San Francisco's most famous madam and also later became the elected Mayor of Sausalito. She also married a rich man and she died very rich in 1982.

Our group's scheduled return ferry will leave at 3:50 PM.

Attendee Bill found some big temporary restrooms not far from the Sausalito ferry dock and led us to them as we walked South from the Bay Model. It was a leisurely walk with incredible blue skies & warm weather for November. See photos.

Vira, it is OK for anyone to leave at any time. The only qualification is people should always tell me when they leave the group early.

This is my first walk! I have to leave by 2pm, however. I plan to take the bus back because it's quicker than the ferry to get to where I have to go. Is that okay?

I am newish to the bay area and the idea of discovering SF on foot greatly appeals to me. I barely know the city at all. I am going to lay out my challenge to getting to these walks because talking abouut what limits me often helps me shift.

I eat carefully for my health (diabetes). I eat no processed food, I oonly buy fresh, organic food at my Sat farmers market. I can channge this pattern and walking is just as good for my health as eaating well, but I have to get to the Thursday farmers market nextt Thurs so I can get to the Sausalito trip -- I really want to do this trip. I used to live in Seattle and love ferries. I love the Sausalito ferry.

I know there is a market at Embarcadero but I don't want to haul mmy week's produce. I just have to adjust my farmers market run to Thursday. This week the shift slipoped away. Onward and upwardd. Next Thurs, I'm getting my green smoothie ingredients onn Thursday, I swear, cause I'm gonna be on that ferry next Sat!!!
