Happy Friday!

Just a quick recap from a great meeting.

- we had some new faces last night and look forward to learning more about everyone's interests and experiences.

TIP Report 2007 - the State Department just released its Trafficking in Persons report for 2007. This year takes a broad look trafficking for forced labor exploitation, taking out the "movement" criteria and focusing on the exploitation. The TIP office also put several Middle Eastern countries on Tier 3, such as Qatar and Bahrain, for their lack of efforts to address exploitation of migrant workers. You can view the report by clicking here.

Recap of Past Meetings - we've accomplished so much over the past few months, such as fundraising for anti-trafficking groups, conducting Community Outreach Volunteer Trainings, film screenings, and hosting guest speakers. You can view this list in the Files section of our website - DC Fight Trafficking & Modern Slavery Group

Now that we're really educated, it's time to focus our energies on taking action! Some of the ideas were:

Business Outreach - put trafficking awareness posters in local businesses and restrooms.
Soccer Game on the National Mall - using "Free to Play" slavery-free soccer balls.
Truth Video - producing a short documentary about trafficking in the DC area to present to government officials.
Toolkit - Our Stop Modern Slavery toolkit is complete - view it at
Stop Modern Slavery Group Outreach - With new toolkit, reach out to other communities across the US to start their own SMS group.
Policy Advocacy - Elizabeth will check about status of NYC anti-trafficking law. Dan will hold a meeting for people interested in the DC anti-trafficking bill.
Educational Materials for At-Risk Girls - Develop informational materials for ESL and language teachers who may come into contact with au pairs who are mistreated
Taxi Driver Sheets Print out flyers to give to taxi drivers on victim identification - look in the "Files" section.
Publicity - Reach out to local TV stations, newspapers, radio shows, etc about publicizing the issue of human trafficking.
Fundraiser - Hold a large-scale fundraiser/awareness event at All Souls Church or similar venue with speakers, videos, arts, food, etc.

If you are interested in helping to plan or organize any of these projects, please email [address removed] and we'll set up specific action committees.

We'll send out more details about these actions next week. If you have any other ideas, please bring them forward.

Also, reminder that tomorrow Saturday is World Refugee Day. Check out the agenda for the day's events at the National Geographic Museum in downtown DC, events go from 12-4pm.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Elizabeth and Becky
