Intro to Responsive Design

Smartphones and laptops and tablets... oh my!  These days people are viewing the web on all types of devices.  How do you keep up and make your site look best on all of these platforms, screen sizes, and resolutions?

Responsive Design to the rescue!  Responsive Design is an approach that says your design and development should respond to the screen size, platform, and orientation of your device.

James Conway of C2 Graphics Productivity Solutions will join us to introduce responsive design and help us understand if it can solve our problems.

  • Examples of Responsive Design and the kinds of problems it solves
  • Some problems it introduces - responsive design vs redirect to mobile version of site vs fluid layouts
  • Mobile First as a design option
  • Media queries as the heart of responsive design - basic demo showing the simple mechanics
  • Flexible images - basic overview and demo
  • Flexible type - basic overview and demo
  • Flexible grids - basic overview and demo
  • Combining techniques for real world use - demo
  • What to do about IE6, IE7 & IE8

We would also like to give some show & tell time at the end of the presentation.  So if you have a recent project using Responsive Design, we'd love to have you!

You can whet your appetite for Responsive Design by viewing the great set of examples at MediaQueri.es

Presentation by James Conway was especially well thought out and informative. Availability of materials for followup study is much appreciated.

Impressive the presenter showed up given he was sick, +1. The presentation was great for people of all skill levels, very well delivered. It was interesting to hear the presenters thoughts on the subject and compare them to my own, the insight on that alone is well worth it for me.

Excellent presentation. From the sample demo, to the 4 steps to retro-fit existing pages, to the advance topic coverage and links. There was something for everyone. Glad I drove the 1 1/2 hr drive.

Great info, thank you James! It really helped give me a sense of how and when to use responsive design. Going forward I'll definitely be designing with a responsive layout in mind.

Yeh, great topic. Curious to what will be said about it. It's definitely the way to build websites moving forward. Unfortunately I'll be missing this one though.

For the non-developer aspect, I think it would be handy in knowing how responsive design works behind the scenes. So when your creating a design, you know how to mockup a UI for the different media types accessing the page.

I believe it would be good for an introduction. From what Jim had described to me, he plans on going over basics and examples and get very hands on with demonstrations plus then go into some code to help people better understand how it works. I'm sure there would be a lot for any level to pull from it. ...and it's always a good networking event.

Would this meetup be an appropriate introduction to responsive design for non-developer web designers? Or is it more appropriate for those versed in HTML/CSS?
