Park Entrance fee: USD5.00 per vehicle
Where: Click the link below to find out!
Who should come: Anyone who enjoys paddling and observing Florida wildlife such as alligators, birds, turtles, deer, foxes, etc. in their natural setting. Kids are welcome if they are in a tandem kayak or canoe with an adult. This is an easy 6 mile paddle.
Why: The Myakka River is a designated Wild and Scenic River and is one of the best places in Florida to see alligators and other wildlife in their natural setting. The park has numerous nature trails and an observation tower we will visit at lunchtime.
Meeting Description: We will meet between 9:30 and 10:00am at the boat ramp on the Upper Myakka Lake near the north end of the Myakka River State Park. Myakka River State Park. Note that there is a $5.00 per vehicle fee to enter the park.
The map and directions to the park can be found at the park's website at http://www.myakkariver.org/
Carolina Mike will have his rental kayak trailer there for those who have reserved kayaks beforehand by visiting his website at http://www.carolinamike.com
or by calling him at[masked]-1959. Rental kayaks will cost $35.00 for the day. People can also rent kayaks or canoes from the Myakka River concession shop at the boat ramp, but their kayaks are small, hard to control, and may be in poor condition. Their canoes should be OK.
We will shuttle most of the cars and Mike's trailer to the parking lot near the takeout point by the park's south entrance. Then we will return to the boat ramp and launch around 10:45am. We will paddle into the Upper Lake and portage the canoes over the weir in the southwest corner of the lake where the river leaves the lake. We will paddle downstream through the wetland about three miles, then stop for lunch near the Observation Tower. After lunch we will walk along the nature trail to the tower. Then we will return to the kayaks and resume paddling downstream. We should reach the takeout point by 3:00pm.
Bring along a light lunch, plenty of water or non-alcholic beverages, sunscreen, insect repellent, protective clothing, binoculars or cameras if desired. It will be hot and humid so plan accordingly.
After the paddle some people may decide to get together at a restaurant to be determined in Sarasota.
I look forward to seeing you there!
