Formed in 1992, the Wilderness Network of Georgia (WNG) has grown to a membership of over 300. WNG is a non-competitive volunteer driven gay and bisexual men’s outdoor recreational group. We connect men with interests in outdoor activities.
The word “wilderness” in our name may suggest an adherence to hard core outdoor pursuits. While we offer a variety of activities suited to all skill levels, the majority of our trips are easy and don’t require any advanced training.
WNG is not a nudist or sex club. The occasional skinny dip at a remote beach or isolated swimming hole is acceptable. Sample trips include urban day hikes, rock climbing, hiking, biking, canoeing, parachuting, hot air balloon rides and caving. We also offer outdoor related events such as museum visits, backpacking clinics and quarterly potlucks. Trips are local, outside the perimeter, throughout Georgia and surrounding states and occasionally may include national or international offerings.
WNG also sponsors social gatherings and informal seminars to increase interest in and pass along knowledge about a favorite outdoor activity. Community service is also an important element of WNG’s mission, with maintenance hikes scheduled on a regular basis in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, the Nature Conservancy and other agencies and organizations.
Annual membership dues are $20. This covers administrative costs, but not the cost of any outings. WNG sponsored trips are not-for-profit, and participants will generally be expected to chip in for gas, parking fees, meals and other necessary expenses. All memberships are governed by the WNG by-laws.
