WordPress Pasadena General Meetup

Hey folks! Get ready for a spooky Meetup, as we inch closer to Halloween! Come on out, spend some time with your fellow geeks, entrepreneurs designers and more.

We keep the format very loose and don't expect to do formal presentations; however, if you have questions you want answered or you want to learn how to do something cool with WordPress come on down!

As always we're open to suggestions for topics!

See you all soon!

I just realized I didn't post a link to that talk I raved about.

I guess my questions will have to wait until the next time around. Thanks for keeping me on the invite list!

Hey folks! Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight. Have your questions ready and remember. This event is totally casual, so please feel free to drop your jacket on the floor if you feel like it! But you probably won't. It might be chilly, so do remember to bring something warm. =)

    See you all tonight!

I hope to make this one and I do have questions. Hope it's okay if they're in a "beginner" mind category. Thanks!

I'd love to attend, but the 7pm on a weeknight time slot prevents me from doing so. I do have a questions that perhaps one of you could answer. I just need to get started with wordpress. I have a website right now and don't want to get rid of it until I develop the wordpress site, but I'm not sure how where to do develop the site and how to transfer it over to the URL i pay for. I know once I figure this out I will be good to move forward. If anyone "gets" what I'm saying and would be game to help, I would be very appreciative!

      Chantel,

Here is what I do. I create test sites on my main domain (e.g. test1.mydomain.com). I install wordpress on the test domain and build the site there. My clients can view it and when ready, we transfer it to the real domain. The transfer is a bit tricky because you have to make sure the config.php files map to the proper domain and the data in options table need the new site info. Too much to detail here but I'm sure folks in this group would be glad to discuss it at the meetup.

Others may have different approaches. I know that John Sundberg of Black Hills Web Works does a similar approach but he names them Demo and the sites then form the foundation of his Portfolio. Hope this helps.

Chantel, I'd echo what John is saying here. One other approach I'd recommend is using an app called called desktop server from
serverpress.com. they have a free offering that will allow you to setup WordPress on your computer. Runs on windows and Mac OS X.

Unfortunately I need to miss another one. We have friends from out of town that we are meeting in O.C. on Thursday night. :(

Hi folks. Trying to clear up my schedule to come to my first meeting. Anyone in the group developing sites with Genesis Themes? I'd love to talk to you about how you are customizing pages, integrating schema.org metadata etc. Maybe on the 10th.
