WordPress SpeedGeeking
A great way to meet new folks, a great way to learn about a bunch of things quickly, and a great way to show+tell (yep, just like Kindergarden) the stuff you love!
What the heck is SpeedGeeking?
Great question! To quote the inventors of SpeedGeeking:
A tongue-in-cheek rip off of the speed dating concept, SpeedGeeking offers a fully immersive, invigorating and hilarious approach to meeting people ... and learning about the cool projects, software tools and crazy ideas that they have been working on. At a SpeedGeek, one group of participants sets up at stations around a room to give 5 minute presentations while the rest of the group migrates in a circle around the room to hear these high-speed raps. The result is an obscene amount of fun, all tied up with a good dose of learning about how technology is being used.
If you'd like to come and see tons of good WordPress stuff, awesome!
Or, if you'd like to present, even awesomer! All you need to do is:
- bring a laptop
- have a theme, plugin, site, or some other WordPress related radicalness you can show off in a few minutes. "
Presenting" is not high pressure -- you're not going to stand up in front of a bunch of people with a microphone and a projector. Instead, you'll just give a quick 5 min demo to 5 people (and then, a minute later, give the same 5min demo to the next 5 people... rinse and repeat until you've gotten to talk to everyone in the room, in a personal low pressure kinda way.)
To present, you don't need to be a developer by any means! Just have something you're passionate about that you think that other folks will find interesting as well:
-
is there one plugin you never go without that you think everyone should consider using? Great! Give us a quick demo.
-
Did find a great way to use a WordPress eCommerce package on your most recent project? Great! Show us.
-
Did you build a custom post type that kicks butt? Cool! Let's check that snizzle out.
As far as I know, SpeedGeeking was invented by Allen Gunn and his amazing team at Aspiration Tech. You can find out lots more about SpeedGeeking on the AspirationTech Wiki page about SpeedGeeking (http://facilitation.aspirationtech.org/index.php?title=Facilitation:SpeedGeeking).
Looking forward to SpeedGeeking out with you all later this month!
If you are interested in presenting, I'd appreciate receiving a quick "Hello! I'm thinking of presenting XYZ" -- you can just post a comment on this MeetUp board, or you can send me an email at wordpress@exygy.com. You don't have to tell us ahead of time, but it'll help us a little bit with planning and setup to know about how many people are thinking of presenting.
