SEO 101

OfficePort (map)

Selected By: Josepha Haden

It's on, Garrett is going to rock our world with some amazing SEO info.

1. If you only had one hour a week to devote to SEO, what would you do?
2. What is your first step in an SEO campaign?

We will hold this Meetup at OfficePort courtesy of Jase Wilson and Briston Davidge.

Hope to see you all there!

I'll post an overview of what I'll cover closer to the meet up date. If you have any special requests, let me know.

We're stoked about this WPKC meetup! Can we set the location from 'not chosen yet' to OfficePort? 208 W. 19th St. KC MO 64108. Note there is a 19th Street and a 19th Terrace one click south of it. We're on 19th Street. Thanks!

Is it possible for someone to compile the slides from the presentation along with helpful information which comes up through discussion for this meeting? I think it would be a great resource for the members of this group, plus it would be helpful for those (like me) who were really looking forward to this topic but cannot attend.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you again and, of course, so excited to meet all of our new people!

I'll be a tiny bit late as usual, but you'll know me when I get there by the amazing level of excitement I have.

    As usual. :D

Hey, guys! I'm totally brand new to WP. I'm concerned that this workshop may be beyond my skill level. Would somebody let me know if it would be worth it for me to attend please? If not, I want to open up my spot for the waitlist person.

Hi Maggie! You should be fine, I have already talked to Ken about attending. If anything you will meet a bunch of people who do know a lot about WordPress & you never know when you may need them.

Is it a - bring my computer, hands on - kind of workshop?

I would suggest bringing a notepad & pen, to take some notes, but we are all a bunch of nerds so computers are always welcome.

Some specific answers to the question, "If you only had one hour a week to devote to SEO, what would you do?"

    1. Get listed, with a link to your site in local or category-specific directories. Some local directories include Yahoo! Local, Google Places, Yelp. To find category directories, do a web search for <your topic> directory. For example, if you're a realtor, try Kansas City realtor directory, or Brookside business directory.

    2. Install WordPress All in One SEO Pack (or other WordPress SEO plug-in) and be sure you're taking a few extra minutes to describe the page content via the meta description. Enter a title for your page. Be sure each page has a unique, descriptive title that makes sense out of context (and fits in about 60 characters).

    3. Try to make your web content conversational. Be sure it answers your visitors questions. A great book with more on writing for the web: Letting Go of the Words: Writing Web Content that Works by Ginny Redish. I also have a post on Writing for the Web at http://usablewebb.com/2009/10/13/writing-for-the-web/

It was the largest meetup we have had, and there is definitely an interest in SEO to go further in depth but also backup a bit to the more novice level for those of us who know barely anything about SEO.

Excellent- good information. Even for those who do this schtuff for a living, it's well worth the time to go back to the basics and make sure you haven't missed anything.

Great! Garrett did a great job. Seeing Garrett's competition and how he ranks vs. them was a strong confidence builder. The list of tools was extremely helpful, I visited two of them today and installed one of the tools already. Thanks!

The subject matter was over my head, as I suspected. However, I did learn a lot. Since Garrett posted a link to the materials he went over, as I learn more about WordPress, I'll be able to refer back to the information and understand/impliment (sp?) it better. Plus, I made some great contacts with really cool people. So, that alone was worth it!
