Film Noir - French for Black Film refers to a cinematic style popular from the early 1940's thru the 1950's though it still makes its way into modern film and still photography even today. The Film Noir era is associated with low key black and white visual style with roots in German Expressionism. As the term relates to photography it is Often used to describe black and white images created with hard light and strong shadows and it is commonly thought of as Hollywood Glamour and typically images of the Film Noir style will place strong emphasize on cynicism and sexual motivations.

The dark shadowy detail is often as important to the story the image tells as the subject of the image it's self. In this workshop we will put away the soft boxes and other light modifiers you have come to be familiar with and rely on in the studio to create soft pleasant light and will return to a simpler day in lighting. We can utilize, snoots, grids, reflectors and even bare bulbs to create the hard blacks, crisp whites and the deep dark hard edged shadows that typify the Film Noir Style. We will also explore the use of gobos in the creation of mood setting shadows that can fall across the setting or even the subject of the image.

As modern photographers we have often been taught that deep hard shadows are not acceptable and that they diminish the technical and artistic value of our images. Film Noir is the exception to that rule while many believe that the style is intensely complicated to light the truth is that lighting in a Film Noir style is actually very simple once you accept that shadows are your friend and that the single light source you are using can create emotionally dramatic lighting. Some of the hallmarks of film noir lighting are the intensity of the darkness the crispness of the light and the emotional content of the details that are left to the imagination in the shadows.

Provided we have enough participation we will have both male and female models for this workshop and they will be prepared to pose in classic Hollywood Glamour and Portrait styles on sets built to emulate the settings of the Noir Crime Dramas of the era. Participants will have the opportunity to work with the models individually as well as working with them as a pair and there will be a challenge shot opportunity at this workshop as well.

Cost is $75 and includes model fees, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. While models are always compensated by VVS for their participation in our workshops tipping while not required is is strongly encouraged. Models will provide photographers with a restricted use model release. Photographers may choose to negotiate full use commercial releases with models. Full use rates are at the discretion of the model but will be based on a per setting fee schedule.
