Open Critique

This is open critique; please bring enough paper copies for everyone. Limit word count to 1200 words. If you bring more than 1200 words, mark the 1200 word mark as we will NOT be critiquing beyond this point unless there is time to do so.

Pages submitted must be in manuscript format: 1-inch margins all the way around, double spaced, indent the 1st line of each paragraph 0.5 inch, ragged right margin, Times New Roman 12 pt. We allow two deviations from standard format: you may print on both sides of the paper, and you may staple your pages. If you don't staple then number your pages.

Also please bring a brief synopsis of previous chapters if you are bringing work that is not the first chapter or first part of a short story.

You may, if you choose, come to critique other's work only and not submit a piece of work. However, you may not submit a piece of writing without critiquing other's work.

Thanks everyone, see you at the meeting. Scott

Thank you so much everyone for the valuable feedback. This was a very helpful session for me, and I enjoyed reading everyone else's work.

There has been some discussion of going back to the old critique format where we each bring one copy (and longer than 1200 words), toss it into the middle of the table, then we each grab someone else's copy and read and critique silently. When done toss that copy back into the middle, grab the next copy, etc.

We quite critting about 9:00 and participating authors quiz their critters for clarification on what they scribbled between lines and in the margins.

    Sound like a plan?

I like this method Scott mentions, even if done with multiple copies. Reading at one's own pace lends itself to more thoughtful critiquing.

The plan: up to 2000 words, one copy, MUST be double spaced so there is room for your critters to write, bring a pencil too.

this is advertised as starting at 6pm, but the room isn't reserved till 6:30 and Scott can't get there until 7:15. What is the real time and schedule?

I'll be there at 6ish. Like many open groups, we've experienced ebbs and flows, and are now working our way back to the purpose of helping people learn how other people see their work.
The process of writing is key to this group. Part of that process is learning how to interpret critique.
      It's hard and amazing.
      Hope to see you tomorrow.

7:15 is unusual. I normally get there about 6:45 most weeks. But you're right, I should change the start time. So I did. :-)

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
