The Joy of Coding Warm-Up

On 1st March 2013 the first edition of the Joy of Coding conference (http://joyofcoding.org/) is taking place in Rotterdam. 010DEV is extremely proud to host the official warm-up party on the conference's eve. Michel Rijnders (http://twitter.com/mrijn) and Jim Webber (http://jimwebber.org/), both presenting at JOC (http://joyofcoding.org/), have been invited to warm up those attending the conference and to comfort the hearts of the rest. Some of the other speakers will join us this evening as well so don't miss the opportunity to meet&greet... and raise a toast as traditionally there will be excellent beer.

Let It Crash! Most people come to Erlang for its ease of concurrency and distribution, they end up staying because of Erlang's fault-tolerance. Yet Erlang's attitude towards fault-tolerance seems quite absurd and even self-contradictory at first sight.

Fault-tolerance is achieved by only coding for the happy path, not handling errors & exceptions, and letting processes crash. This presentation will explain and demonstrate (via live coding) how it's done.

The Challenge of Connected Data A rant about choosing the right storage and processing system for the right data with a (social) recommendations example that shows the pitfalls of the golden hammer.
