Code-mixing, an academic term that refers to the insertion of foreign words into one's mother-tongue conversation, has always had a bad rap, especially in the eyes of educators. But is it all bad and inappropriate? Or does it depend on the context and the speaker's intention? Nonetheless, the phenomenon of code-mixing has become increasingly popular in the workplaces of Hong Kong today, as our world has become a lot more globalised over the past few decades. In addition, with so much English learning resources and media in English medium on the internet, it makes a lot of sense that younger generations would use more English words in their mother-tongue conversation than before. So has Hong Kong Cantonese evolved to a new stage? Is it now imperative that you should know how to code-mix as a native Hong Kong person? Join our discussion this Saturday to find out! Medium of instructions: Cantonese, English *NEW: You can now view all the code-mixing terms we have analysed so far at https://blog.megaexplorer.net/hkdict.html *For the "How can you become an expert in code-mixing?" powerpoint slides, please go to https://blog.megaexplorer.net/hklang.html *For those of you who are not yet familiar with what this meetup aims to do, you may have a look at the powerslides of "Why should you take your code-mixing skill to the next level?" and "How shall we investigate code-mixing in Hong Kong?" in the link above.
