Real World Hadoop: A Case Study - Dean HallmanAs the Internet produces more and more data, volume is outstripping our capacity to keep up, understand and react to all the information flowing into a business. Hadoop is the open-source community's answer to this new class of "big data" problems. And its explosive growth is presenting huge opportunity for those who can wield this incredible tool. This talk will introduce Hadoop and its eco-system, the class of problems they are useful in solving, and specifically how we at Scripps Networks Interactive are using Hadoop to solve the company's big data ingestion, financial reporting and analytics problems. This talk will present a very high-level, conceptual framework and architectural overview, useful in framing more detailed dives into specific areas of the technology set. Dean Hallman is a Senior Software Engineer working remotely for uLive.com, a division of Scripps Networks Interactive, where he has been instrumental in defining and implementing the company's Big Data strategy, architecture and Insights engine. Prior to Scripps, Dean spent much of his career as an entrepreneur, co-founding or early entrant to several successful startups, including Stingray Software, Pronto.com and most recently, Realgravity.com. Dean is a Columbia native and holds a BS in Electrical & Software Engineering from the University of South Carolina, and a MS in Computer Engineering from North Carolina State University.

Welcome to Open Hack Night in Columbia! Open Hack is an event open to current and aspiring developers. We have a meeting every two months, providing developers a chance to mix-and-match three options:

Presentations: We have two presenters talk about two different languages. The presentations are 30-40 minutes each with up to fifteen minutes for questions. Unconference: Not interested in the topics for tonight's event? Come share what you're passionate about? We'll have 6 unconference slots of ten minutes each. Come drop some knowledge on your fellow devs! OpenHack: Want time and space to work on something or pair program with someone new? That's cool, grab a spot and a friend and spend some time working together on a project. After the presentations, bring your favorite board game, Magic deck, or hold a LAN party and hang out with your fellow developers. We'll keep the doors open!

Open Hack Columbia is a collaboration of CETi, Voterheads, and IT-oLogy.
