Come to The Calico Early Man Site Archaeological Dig - Learn a little science, have a lot of fun!
Due to the overwhelming response to our Dig Weekends we must limit the number of diggers to 30 per weekend. So the first 30 people that sign up with the Registar ( Dan Eliseuson) Saturday morning will be the diggers for that weekend.
Digging tools provided. Bring hiking boots, hat, scarf, gloves, Saturday lunch from home. If you have them, bring magnifying glass and knee pads. The Motel 6 or the Super 8 in Barstow (19 miles), very rough campsites at the dig site (firepits, tables, outhouse only). Or drive in for Saturday only.
Schedule for Saturday, November 3rd
8:30 am volunteer sign-in, orientation, and assignment (latecomers welcome)
9:00 am pits open for digging
12 noon lunch break (bring a lunch from home)
1:00 pm digging resumes
4:00 pm pits close
5:00pm - 6:pm Dinner ($5 contribution includes dinner and breakfast)
6:00pm -7:pm lecture in the new classroom
8:00 - 9:pm bonfire (weather permitting)
Easter Sunday, November 4th
7:00 - 8:30am eggs, pancake, juice, bacon breakfast provided in rangers quarters
8:30 - 12 noon digging
noon- head toward home
In case of inclement weather, digging will be replaced by other activities such as weighing and sorting artifacts, training in artifact manufacturing and recognition, site maintenance, or flintknapping lessons.
