Bach Brandenburg Concertos @ Acad. Of Music --(unofficial "member organizable")

This is not an "official" event at this point, as I am not sure whether I will attend and guarantee company. I've posted it in case members have an interest, with the idea that group members who know each other may contact each other (via the Meetup.com email feature or phone) and self-organize. People interested can also try posting comments (under this event) to try to find company. Or, you might just show up alone or with friends and enjoy the event, and perhaps bump into others you know.

This year’s program casts a retrospective and somewhat nostalgic glance back at 20 years of “Bach at New Year’s” by performing all of Bach’s Six Brandenburg Concerti backwards; that is, of course, in reverse order.

Beginning with the friendly and intimate Concerto No. 6, scored for the septet of two arm-held violas (da braccio), two leg-held violas (da gamba), cello, bass and harpsichord, the ensemble will steadily grow through the mischievous and dreamy Concerto No. 5 with its flute, violin and harpsichord solos (including THAT solo harpsichord cadenza) and the echo-happy Concerto No. 4 which sports flute and violin solos, to end brilliantly with the brass-studded Concerti Nos. 3, 2 and 1 in Berkshire Bach’s famous “special” versions. Concerto No. 3, lacking an Adagio, always provokes the annual Berkshire Bach guessing game, as perhaps it did in Bach’s day: what will it be this time?

As always, the Berkshire Bach Ensemble boasts virtuosi from near and far – from Berkshire County, Ashfield, Boston, Brattleboro, the Catskills, New Jersey, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina and New York City (even Brooklyn).
