Wausau is an ordinary town in the state of Wisconsin. The people of Wausau take care of cows and horses and some of them keep an animal called a zorse, which is a hybrid of a horse and a zebra. The people of Wausau expect to live and die in ordinary ways.

The sheriff of Wausau is Wayne Cypress. He is strong and brave and responsible. He has to be, because he lost his wife many years ago in a motorcycle accident, and she left him with two daughters to raise.

His oldest daughter is Officer Dana Cypress. Officer Dana Cypress has joined the police force of Wausau, and she wants to be just as good as her mother and just as tough as her dad. She has to be, because she is a single mother, raising a son.

Cooper Hinch is the son of Officer Dana Cypress. Cooper is just a boy, but he is very imaginative. Cooper creates entire worlds with his toy soldiers, and he draws his own graphic novels and fills them with characters and concepts that are too crazy too be real -- unless, of course, they actually are real.

Derek Hinch is a tattoo artist and the father of Cooper Hinch. Derek Hinch tries to be a good father, but he feels like he is always failing.

Martha Ann Cypress is the daughter of Sheriff Wayne Cypress and the sister of Officer Dana Cypress. Martha Cypress is a student at Wisconsin State University in Madison. Some people think that Martha Cypress is a bit of a wildcat. Some people think that Martha Cypress is having an affair with Professor Aaron Weimar.

Professor Aaron Weimar teaches at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Professor Aaron Weimar has travelled all the world learning about the new ideas and other ways of thinking and putting his ideas into his books.

Nithya Weimar wonders if her husband is cheating on her. However Nithya blames the other women in her life.

Lester Majak is an old man and he should be sick and frail, but he has spent a lifetime exercising to stay strong, and he has even written books on fitness. The people of Wausau often see Lester Majak running over the hills like a stallion. Lester Majak has become a local celebrity.

All of these people should live and die in ordinary ways, but they don't, because one day in January several dozen ordinary citizens of Wausau, Wisconsin step out of their coffins and their crematories and rise from the dead. Some of them are glad to be alive and some wish they could be dead but all of them have super-strength and they have the ability to heal from the most terrible wounds. In fact, these 'revivers' can tear steel with their bare hands and recover immediately from getting shot by assault rifles.

Arlene Ditman is an old woman who dies and comes back to life. She wants to be dead so badly she walks out the family barn and starts doing terrible things to herself. Then, she starts doing terrible things to other people.

May Tao is an internet reporter. May Tao grew up in the Wausau area and went to school with Dana Cypress, so she knows the area well. As she covers the story May Tao will have to face many difficult choices of ethics and personal loyalty. She will also have to fight for her life.

Ibrahaim Ramin is a scientist with the Center for Disease Control, or CDC. The government sends Ibrahaim Ramin to Wausau to try and understand why the dead are coming back to life in this town, and if this is going to keep happening across the rest of the world.

Thuy Vang is an immigrant of the Hmong minority from Vietnam and Laos. In the day she cleans the houses of rich white people and in the evening she practices sorcery.

Blaine Abel works as an exorcist. Blaine Abel believes that the devil attacked him when he was a child. Now Blaine Abel has taught himself every skill that a soldier of God should need, from shooting a crossbow to riding a snowmobile, so he can destroy the living and the undead spawn of Satan wherever he finds them, no matter how many 'innocents' have to die in the process.
