Painting with Light @ the beach
Details
THIS IS GOING TO BE A LOT OF FUN!!! For those of you who were at the May critique and saw the really cool photos with orbs and such you know what I am talking about. Well, now is your chance to learn how to do those shots and many more. Bill Debley will be on hand to help us with settings and he is even bringing his handmade devices to get perfect orbs and domes.
Bring: Camera, lenses, memory cards, charged batteries, tripod (very important!), and a shutter release if you have one (wireless or cable is fine). Also, bring water or something else to drink if you wish and it may get chilly that late so you may want to wear layered clothing. Don't forget gloves if your hands get cold easily. Also, bring whatever "lights" you may want to use. Some suggestions include colored led lights, flashlights, sparklers, EL wire. Don't forget a small flashlight to use at your tripod so you can see what you are setting your camera to. I would also like to ask everyone to stop at your local 99cent store and pick up one or two large glow sticks so we can get a group shot with "f/Stops" painted with light.
No matter which technique you will try, WEAR DARK CLOTHING!!!
I will bring steel wool and accessories to try painting with a little fire. If you would like to try it yourself you will need: a fire extinguisher, very fine steel wool (0000 or 000 is the best), a liter or 9volt battery to ignite (when transporting, DO NOT keep battery with steel wool as all it has to do is touch it to ignite it!!!), a metal whisk with a loop at the end and a metal chain that attaches to the end loop on the whisk (you decide how long you want this; the shorter it is, the better chance you have to get hit with the sparks). If you will be attempting this method I suggest wearing a hoodie so your hair does not catch on fire. Finally, INFORMATION CONTAINED HERE IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY!!! F/STOPS CAMERA CLUB, ITS BOARD MEMBERS AND REGULAR MEMBERS ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY OR LIABILITY IF YOU ARE INJURED IN ANY WAY OR GET A TICKET FOR DOING THIS ON THE BEACH!!!! I don't know for sure if it is illegal to do this on the beach but I'm giving it a shot anyway (every pun intended :-)) Because this may be illegal, we may only get one chance to photograph it.
Where: PLEASE BE ADVISED, THE ADDRESS FOR THE SUNSET RESTAURANT IS NOT WHERE WE ARE MEETING. I HAD TO PUT AN ADDRESS IN AND THAT IS THE CLOSEST PLACE. PLEASE SEE THE DIRECTIONS AS FOLLOWS!!!We will be going to what I have always known as "Free Zuma". Why? Because parking is free!!! From the valley, take one of the canyons to PCH; I usually take Kanan Dume Road. From Kanan Dume Road you will turn right (north) on to PCH. Go about 1 mile and make a left on Westward Beach Road. You will travel for about a quarter mile and right where the road starts to bend to the left, there will be bathrooms on the right. We will meet in front of the bathrooms at 8pm sharp. Parking is free anywhere you can find a spot on the road, which I imagine shouldn't be an issue at that time of night. Following my directions, if you get to The Sunset restaurant you have gone too far. I suggest you look this up on Google maps to familiarize yourself with where we will be meeting. Looking forward to a really fun time!
