Photowalk through Venice Beach

This photowalk was originally researched and organized by a friend of mine a few years ago, who has graciously given me permission to use her data (a big thank you to my friend Kimberly!) – this was the very first photowalk I participated in after joining a photography/hiking meetup group back in 2009 and I loved it! While the original photowalk started in the canals, it might be easier to meet in front of the Venice pier as finding parking around the canals can be difficult. Inspired by Erin Mahoney Harris' fantastic book "Walking LA: 38 walking tours exploring stairways, streets, and buildings you never knew existed" –urban photowalks are a wonderful way to explore and photograph our city. You don't have to go into the hills to see the beautiful nature of Los Angeles. From the uniqueness of the Venice Canals, to the diversity of Abbot Kinney Blvd, ending with the vibrant life of the Venice Boardwalk, this will be a great opportunity to photograph the rich color and life of Venice.

Approximate length. 3 miles roundtrip

Recommended: carpooling; sunblock; wear comfortable walking shoes; hat; bottled water; polarizing filter; tripod (if you want to shoot the sunset after the photowalk).

Walking directions:
We will meet at the Venice pier and walk east down Washington Boulevard, turning left (north) at the canal, following Grand Canal Court and then turn right (east) on Linnie Canal Court. We’ll turn left (north) at the end of that canal and continue west on Carroll Canal, until it meets Dell Avenue. While walking through the canals, we will explore the distinctive houses, ducks and ambiance spawned from Abbot Kinney's vision so many years ago. Turning north on Dell Avenue and east on South Venice Blvd., we will continue and turn north on Abbot Kinney Blvd. Various eateries and shops are abound on Abbot Kinney. You might just find a new favorite place to spend your time!

At Abbot Kinney and Main Street, we will turn south - continuing until Windward Avenue. Here, we will turn west and head down the famous Venice boardwalk ocean front walk on our way back to the pier. Diversity is an understatement along this strip.

I know this is a lot of walking, but it's a really great route and I highly recommend following the whole route to enjoy the multitude of photo opps.

For those of you who wish to take a shorter walk, after leaving the canals, you can instead turn left (west) on South Venice Blvd., and continue on your own which will take you back to the boardwalk.
