Moving the front end out of our monolithic Rails app

Savy Brandt is a Frontend Software Engineer born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2016 Savy left her stable life as a yoga studio manager to pursue a fast-paced career in tech. Savy and her team have successfully established a new frontend codebase external to the rails monolith and a process for migrating and redesigning on a per-page basis.

Frontend Software Engineer, Savy Brandt reflects on her 2-year journey refactoring and migrating the frontend codebase out of a monolithic Rails application. From early experimentation utilizing the react-rails and react-on-rails gems to integrate React components directly into the Rails templates to using embedded iframes to display newly built pages served from an S3 bucket, Savy discusses the common frontend pitfalls that necessitated the migration to begin with and shares the knowledge gained from successes and failures along the way.
