Creating New (Scalable) Mobile Experiences - NPR & Bolster Labs
Details
Happy to announce two great talks for our next meetup from our friends at NPR and Bolster Labs! They will both explore their recent experiences with creating new mobile experiences for a large audience, the challenges associated, processes, and their respective tech stack. NPR and your local station have made a show just for you, and put it into an app: NPR One. Having worked on the project for more than a year, Erica and Jeremy will share some of the secrets behind crafting this new listening experience. See how the app evolved and changed through an iterative development process
NPR Presenters:Erica Osher - Sponsorship Product Manager
Erica has been working in web and mobile product management for the past 7 years. She is now helping NPR to find creative ways to recognize corporate sponsors that both honor the organization’s core principles and provide value to the sponsor. Erica is a Baltimore resident and spends most of her free time experimenting with new cooking techniques and seeing live music.
Jeremy Pennycook - Mobile Technology Manager
Passionate about the future and the breadth of opportunities available for those who are intrepid and willing to adapt, Jeremy leads teams solving problems with creativity, technology and collaboration. Currently, he is spear-heading NPR's efforts to re-imagine digital listening through mobile. When unplugged, he enjoys playing music, riding his bike and exploring as many food trucks as possible.

Building a mobile app is hard. Building a mobile app that scales to a large user base is much harder.
Anticipate user growth from day zero. You (and your team) don't want to be up at 3am trying to fix scaling issues when new users are downloading your app every second.
Everyone loses in that scenario. Don't let that be you!
In this talk, Adam will discuss thoughtfully designing both the front-end and back-end architecture of a complex mobile app from start to finish to avoid as many of those "oh s***" moments as possible, without over-engineering.
Bolster Labs Presenter:Adam Miskiewicz - Technical Director, Bolster Labs
Developer, an innovator, an optimist and a generalist.
Adam is a technical director at Bolster, leading interactive projects, where he brings a strong development background and a wealth of real-world experience building applications that are fast and scalable.
Interactive development is a cross-domain exercise, and Adam has mastered the patterns, principles and practices that enable this pursuit. An expert at mobile development, Adam has deep familiarity with mobile platforms and SDKs. Adam is also the chief architect of Bolster’s Oblsk platform, a component-based content management system.
Location note - Advertising.com is located on the Under Amour campus in the Ivory building. Visitors parking spots are all around the buildings and no concern during this time.
