Townhall: Challenges & Opportunities for Demystifying the Brain

The human brain and nervous system are extremely complex: When something goes wrong, it is typically difficult—if not impossible—to cure. Cancers of the brain are particularly malignant and, at some point, most families will encounter the devastating effects of other brain diseases such as Parkinson’s, ALS, bipolar disorder, or Alzheimer’s. Combining systems-level thinking and an interdisciplinary approach, researchers at Seattle’s Institute for Systems Biology are using cutting-edge technologies to pioneer new ways of understanding the brain in an effort to improve diagnostics, treatments, and prevention of these diseases. In a discussion moderated by Dr. Nino Ramirez, director of the Center for Integrative Brain Research at Seattle Children’s Institute and Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington, a panel of experts—Ret. Army Gen. Peter Chiarelli, of One Mind for Research; Dr. Christof Koch, chief scientific officer at the Allen Institute for Brain Science; and Dr. Leroy Hood, ISB president and co-founder—explores the latest developments in brain-related research.
