Understanding the self: An exploration of gender transition in trans men.
Details
Understanding the self; a pathway to empowerment – an exploration of gender transition in trans men with psychotherapist Annie Jones
Synopsis
Referral rates to gender identity clinics have soared in recent years, with waiting lists of up to four years often experienced. In the meantime, awareness of what it is to be transgender is often limited within the therapeutic community. Knowledge of the coming out process, of gender dysphoria, of the dynamics of medical and social transition, and how to support trans people is increasing, but there is still a long way to go.
This talk will focus on the experiences of four trans men, using first hand experiential narratives to reflect on their coming out processes and subsequent transitions. It will shine a light into how they came to the realisation that they were transgender, how they navigated their coming out, transition, and integration. Whilst there are common themes, each story is unique, and brings with it a powerful insight into how living authentically leads to empowerment and transformation in the emotional, physical, temporal and spiritual dimensions.
