EdTech Hack Night 2 - Community Project

Details
Join other members of the edtech community in building an interesting product that directly affects the Boston/Cambridge educational ecosystem.
This time around we will present a project to the group and then split into teams to begin working. The project will be an ongoing, open source project that will be built over time during a series of Meetups. The goal is that when complete, the final product will be very usable and also scalable across other cities.
The Project:
The problem we are tackling is centered around linking children with after school programs. Currently there is no way for a parent to easily search for after school programs that cater to their child's interests while taking into consideration location, cost, and other factors. Directory listings of educational programs are often not updated and parents end up only finding out about programs through word of mouth or by what is available directly through their child's school. This is a problem for both parent's and after school programs.
We are working with Connie Chow from Science Club for Girls (http://scienceclubforgirls.org/) to spear head the project as she has experience from both sides of the problem. The finished product will directly impact her efforts at SCFG as well as the Boston/Cambridge community.
At this meetup we will:
-
Listen to an introduction from Connie Chow, the Executive Director of SCFG, about the after school program problem that is currently a major barrier to reaching more students for her organization as well as many others.
-
Work together on the ideation phase and requirements.
-
Split into teams (front end/product & back end) and get to work on tasks we define.
-
Complete a set of defined deliverables by the end of the night.
We are looking for all types of people to bring their experience in building product to this event. We will be starting from scratch and while it is imperative that we have coders present, we also need UX designers, UI designers, anyone who has scoped and built an MVP, and people who deeply understand education and can help dig into requirements.
As always, you are welcomed to bring your own projects to work on if you prefer. :) There will be food and beverages for all.
