Predicting the Future of Tech Venture Capital in B.C.

We have gathered an amazing panel of Venture Capitalists from a range of sectors and stages to provide an update on what they are seeing in the current market. Are you curious about where round sizes and valuations are at in Vancouver? Are companies using SAFE’s or convertible notes, preferred shares or commons? We will discuss trends in terms sheets, who is active in the market and how the investing landscape might change after the launch of the newly announced BC Tech Fund.

About our panelists:

Michelle Scarborough (https://ca.linkedin.com/in/mscarborough), Senior Vice-President, Kensington Capital Partners

Michelle is an experienced Canadian venture capital investor, with a strong track record investing in technology companies and with a special interest in energy tech, clean tech and industrial technology. A recognized leader in the investment community, Michelle is the Past Chair of the National Angel Capital Organization, the founder of the Women’s Angel Network in Canada, and an advisory member for Women in Energy and Private Equity. Prior to joining Kensington, Michelle was a Founder and Managing Partner of Fronterra Ventures, an energy technology venture fund. She also led the establishment of the Ontario Emerging Technologies Fund that invested alongside early stage venture investors and angels in Ontario’s highest potential technology companies across ICT, cleantech and life science. Michelle started her career as an entrepreneur and has built and sold a number of companies in technology, energy and mining sectors.

Sarah Applebaum (https://ca.linkedin.com/in/sarahapplebaum), Associate at Pangaea Ventures

Pangaea is the world leader in advanced materials venture capital, investing in startups with disruptive breakthrough innovation in chemistry and material science. Sarah is a member of the Young Private Capitalist Committee of the CVCA, advisory board member for the CIX Cleantech Conference, start up showcase review board for SXSW Eco, and mentor to the Singularity University Labs Accelerator. Sarah is the co-founder of CatapultYVR, a Vancouver based organization that strives to create a more interconnected and multi-disciplinary innovation ecosystem.

Jenny Yang (https://ca.linkedin.com/in/jennyinc), CEO/Founder at Aida Software Corp

Jenny is a technology entrepreneur and investor. She is the CEO/Co-founder of Aida and a Partner at Panda Angel Partners. Previously Jenny was CEO/Co-founder of Metafor Software which was acquired by Splunk (NASDAQ: SPLK) in 2015. Prior to Metafor, Jenny was a Venture Capitalist at BDC Capital where she led and managed investments in startups such as Bycast (acquired by NetApp) and OctigaBay (acquired by CRAY). Prior to becoming a VC, Jenny was a consultant with The Boston Consulting Group and Bain & Co. Jenny began her career as an engineer at Telus and Nortel. She holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering from UBC and an MBA from INSEAD.

Maria has been working with emerging growth companies since 2000, with a main focus on IT-related businesses. Maria was most recently Acting CFO of Terramera, Inc., an early stage Ag-tech company, responsible for overseeing finance and general operations. She spent eleven years with GrowthWorks Capital Ltd., one of Canada's largest venture capital firms where she invested in and served on a variety of boards, mostly in the areas of enterprise software, e-commerce and med-tech.

Karimah Es Sabar (https://ca.linkedin.com/in/karimahessabar), CEO & Partner at Quark Venture Inc

Prior to joining Quark Venture, Karimah led the Centre for Drug Research and Development as President & CEO, and before that, Life Sciences BC. She has an expansive global career spanning multi-national pharmaceutical/biotechnology companies, start-ups, not-for-profit organizations and venture investment. Karimah has global experience, a large network, as well as leadership in marketing, business development, investment, strategic alliances, global collaborations and public private partnerships. She has raised significant funds, brought products to market, and has also developed and executed innovation and translation strategies in the life science sector and in biotech investment.
