The Dyslexia Survival Guide — Finding What Works for You (6-Week Course)
Details
Do reading and writing take more time and energy than people realise?
Perhaps you lose your place while reading, reread the same paragraph or struggle to put your ideas into words on a page. You might check a message carefully and still miss mistakes—or avoid paperwork because it feels exhausting.
This six-week course is for adults who want practical ways to make these everyday tasks easier.
Based on The Dyslexia Survival Guide by Gearóid Carey, each session explores one common difficulty and six strategies that may help.
What we’ll explore
- Week 1: Reading more comfortably — slow reading, losing your place and mistaking words.
- Week 2: Taking in what you read — understanding and remembering the meaning.
- Week 3: Finding reliable spellings — managing uncertainty about how words are spelt.
- Week 4: Getting your ideas onto the page — turning what you want to say into clear writing.
- Week 5: Checking your writing — noticing mistakes and making your meaning easier to follow.
- Week 6: Protecting your time and energy — managing the extra effort reading and writing can demand.
What to expect
Clear explanations, everyday examples and opportunities to discuss what helps. We’ll explore tools such as read-aloud features, dictation, writing templates and simple checking routines.
You won’t need to master all 36 strategies. The aim is to choose something useful, try it in everyday life and build your own support plan.
Who is it for?
Adults diagnosed with dyslexia, those who recognise these difficulties and anyone wanting to understand their own reading and writing experiences better. No formal diagnosis is needed to take part.
You’re welcome to listen without sharing personal experiences. There is no pressure to read aloud, spell on the spot or show anyone your writing.
About the facilitator
