6 Everyday Challenges. 36 Practical Strategies.
Living with autism can bring everyday challenges that other people may not recognise or understand.
You may find it difficult to understand unspoken meanings, communicate your intentions, manage sensory overload, cope with unexpected changes, switch between activities or deal with the exhausting effort of fitting in.
The Autism Survival Guide is a practical six-week course designed to help autistic adults better understand these challenges and discover simple strategies that can make everyday life easier.
Based on the book The Autism Survival Guide by Gearóid Carey, the course focuses on six common challenges, with six practical strategies for each.

## What We'll Cover

Week 1 — Missing the Unspoken Meaning
Understanding hints, indirect communication and the expectations people don't always express clearly.
Week 2 — Being Misunderstood
Helping other people understand what you mean, communicating your needs and reducing misunderstandings.
Week 3 — Sensory Overload
Practical ways to manage overwhelming sounds, lights, crowds and other sensory experiences.
Week 4 — Unexpected Change
Managing uncertainty, preparing for changes and making unexpected situations easier to navigate.
Week 5 — Stopping and Switching
Practical strategies for moving between activities, managing transitions and dealing with interruptions.
Week 6 — The Effort of Fitting In
Understanding the exhaustion that can come from masking, managing social expectations and finding ways to reduce unnecessary effort.

## How the Course Works

Each weekly online session will explore one everyday challenge and introduce six practical strategies to help manage it.
We'll focus on:

  • Understanding the challenge and how it affects everyday life.
  • Exploring six practical strategies.
  • Identifying what might work best for you.
  • Choosing one simple strategy to try during the week.
  • Sharing experiences, questions and ideas in a supportive environment.

The approach is simple:
Notice. Support. Return.
Notice the difficulty, identify a practical support and return to what helps when needed.
