Travel Writing Workshop

This will be casual: stop by on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday night, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in whole or in part - even better, stop by every night! :)

Delicious food and drinks with an international flair provided but PLEASE RSVP AS SOON AS YOU ARE POSSIBLY ABLE for each night you can attend. Thank you!

Bring either a piece of travel writing or writing related to local interest that could potentially be pitched to a magazine such as Travel+Leisure or Afar (usually short-form pieces) or newspapers that run weekend getaway guides, e.g. the "36 Hours" column in The New York Times or "The Weekend Getaway" in The Wall Street Journal. Examples of such work be available for your perusal, in case you don't regularly subscribe to travel-related periodicals, so please no worries on that front. Same goes for various books with examples of acclaimed travel writing, such as "The Best American Travel Writing - 2015" edited by Andrew McCarthy.

You may also bring a full-length travel feature, or draft thereof, up to 2,000 words BUT please be prepared if absolutely necessary to share *as little as* a 400-word (maybe more; we'll all have to be a little flexible) excerpt from the feature and then leave us in suspense for next time, when we'll try to make finishing your piece, or the next part of it, first priority. We will play this by ear depending on how many people show up.

Your best photos and/or video footage also more than welcome for some show 'n' tell, especially if they accompany your piece as they hypothetically might in a submission to an editor.

You can also come just to listen and offer feedback. Each attendee will have the chance to let everyone know whether they want constructive critique offered or not.

Remember: if you have never traveled in your life, you are still very much wanted in the group! All we ask is that you have an open mind and ideally a curiosity towards travel. :)  You're sure to get some valuable tips from the group.

We also hope to get into some fun times, especially on Friday night ;) - start the weekend off right with your new friends and fellow travel lovers - Jake & Ita!
