After your subterranean exploration, the adventure continues to the Huckleberry Sawtooth Berry Fields. Here, you'll find yourself surrounded by lush berry bushes, ripe for the picking. The sweet, juicy huckleberries are a true delight, and you'll enjoy the simple pleasure of gathering these delicious fruits in the serene, picturesque setting of the Sawtooth Mountains.
But the excitement doesn't end there. Your trip also includes a relaxing fishing experience in the pristine lakes and rivers of the region. This camping trip to the Guller Ice Caves and Lava Tubes, combined with berry picking, fishing, and mushroom foraging, promises a perfect blend of exploration, relaxation, and culinary adventure. Itinerary:

  1. Friday 6:00 PM Drive to Camp
  2. Friday: For people who arrive early Friday, start grilling some food
  3. Saturday 8AM: Visit Ice Caves, Lava Tubes, and Land Bridge
  4. Saturday 10AM: Harvest Berries at Sawtooth Berry Fields
  5. Saturday 12PM: Eat Lunch. Can eat our own lunch or go to trout lake town
  6. Saturday 1PM: Harvest Mushrooms using this map. We will likely split up so we don't cover same areas.
  7. Saturday 6PM: Cook up harvested food for the night.
  8. Sunday 8AM: Harvest Berries or mushrooms
  9. Sunday 11AM: Pack out camp
  10. Sunday 12PM: Visit town of trout lake
  11. Sunday 1PM: Go home

Equipment to bring

  1. Headlamp
  2. Free Berry Permit
  3. Mushroom Permit and map
  4. Cooking ingredients
  5. Cooking equipment. There are grills at camp but usually people bring their own.
  6. Buckets/containers for huckleberry/mushrooms
  7. Food to share
  8. Camping gear
  9. (Optional) Fishing equipment
  10. Things you want to bring to camp

Payment methods:
Make sure payment is for friends/family

Cost and Refund:
Cost is $50 for a spot. Only payment guarantees a spot. Full refund if you cancel before 8/28. Afterwards only $25 refund if you can find a replacement and no refund if you can't.

Gas and Food Costs and Sharing
Gas costs is negotiated within each car group ahead of the drive. Everyone should bring food and split costs for additional food bought. I encourage people to share part of each of our shellfish harvest as part of our communal experience.

Mushroom Identification
Any mushrooms you consume are entirely your own liability and up to you to identify. You will need to do your research ahead of time if you plant to harvest or consume mushrooms. While some members of the group are more experienced and willing to help, please do not rely on anyone. It's also possible you have an allergy to a mushroom that someone else doesn't have.

Sharing harvested mushrooms is risky and must be approached with caution.

Berry and Mushroom Permit and Mushroom Map Regulations
Read both. Be sure to stay within the limits of the free permit and print them out and carry them with you. For mushrooms you need to have the permit and mushroom map printed and on you while foraging.
