What is Chan? Chan is a central practice of Mahayana Buddhism. Chan is a word originated from the Sanskrit word Dhyana. It means "concentration", "stillness contemplation" or "thought cultivation". We follow Chinese tradition of Wei Yang lineage, the oldest of five Chan schools which was transmitted by Grand Dharma Master Hsuan Hua (宣化 上人). Chan spread south to Vietnam as Thien and east to Korea as Seon, and, in the 13th century, to Japan, where it became known as Zen
