On May 5th, we're heading somewhere most foreigners never find โ a quiet city an hour and a half away, where a river, a 1,000-year-old ceramic tradition, and a king's tomb are waiting.
No planning. No Korean needed. Just show up.What we're doing:
- Walking a scenic river suspension bridge
- Visiting a traditional Buddhist temple
- Getting hands-on at the Yeoju Ceramic Festival โ pottery painting included
- Riding a traditional boat on the Namhan River
- Ending the day at King Sejong's royal tomb
All in one day. Back in Seoul by 6:30pm.
The details:
- Date: May 5th (Monday โ Children's Day holiday)

Here's what actually happens on this day:
-
๐ Walk the river at your own pace A 1.8km riverside trail across a suspension bridge โ Namhan River on both sides, no crowds, just wind and water. Easy walk, big views.
-
โฉ Step inside a 600-year-old temple Silleuksa sits right on the riverbank. One of the few temples in Korea where the river and the architecture actually talk to each other. Take it slow.
-
๐บ Make something with your hands At the Yeoju Ceramic Festival, you get a full hour of hands-on pottery painting โ guided, included, no experience needed. Korea has been making celadon here for over 1,000 years. Now it's your turn.
-
โต Ride a traditional Korean boat The Hwangpo boat floats you down the Namhan River for 25โ30 minutes. Old-style wooden vessel, orange sails, river views. It sounds small โ it stays with you.
-
๐ฟ End the day at a royal tomb in the forest Yeongneung is where King Sejong rests โ the man who created the Korean alphabet. Quiet paths, stone figures, tall trees. The kind of place that makes you slow down without trying.
Solo travelers very welcome โ this is a great way to meet people while seeing a side of Korea most expats never get to.
