"How to repair democracy in polarized America"

The HPRA speaker this Friday is Carl Jarvis, a former naval officer, a Republican precinct chair, and the author of "The United States of Dysfunction". Mr. Jarvis' book discusses the rise of political conventions, the negative consequences of the primary system (a failed reform introduced a hundred-plus years ago), and the deterioration in the national discourse. He offers a vision of change in which ordinary Americans take an active role in the major parties that are often controlled top- down by party insiders. We will hear how indirect primaries are the solution to our troubles wherein party members elect convention delegates who then select the party candidates who run for office at all levels.
