March 22: Crafting Amazing Stories

Details
Telling great stories is vital to connecting with your organization's audience. How do you go about finding the stories? Once you find a story, how do you craft it in a compelling way that captures and inspires your audience? Join us for an exciting evening of experts sharing storytelling best practices.
***We'll be breaking this event into two parts. During the first half, you will hear from the speakers below and have a chance to ask questions.
We'll also host a workshop on April 26, where we will break into groups and each group will go through the storytelling process with a facilitator. You will have a chance to get feedback on a story you're working on.
Date: Tuesday, March 22
Time: 6:30-8:30 pm
Location: Vanguard Communications, 2121 K St NW #650
Cost: Free, but space is limited and RSVP is required.
Melissa Rogers (https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissasrogers), Supervising Producer at Stone Soup Films, will discuss the process they go through when crafting a story, including "casting," interviewing and staying true to the story.
Documentary filmmaker Vladimir Pcholkin (https://www.youtube.com/user/Beekeeperstories) will talk about the stories he’s created for international nonprofits, as well as show a clip from one of his films.
Tanya Hutchins (http://www.tanyahutchins.com/biography/), a communications representative at the Machinists Union and former TV news anchor, will talk about how storytelling at nonprofits is often advocacy journalism, where the storyteller advocates for a particular issue or position. She will also talk about the process they use at the Union to create a video.
Brandi Horton (https://www.vancomm.com/team/brandi-horton/), Vice President at Vanguard Communications, will share examples of creative ways that nonprofits can use digital channels to curate stories among their networks and leverage those stories for social change.
Special thanks to Vanguard Communications (https://www.vancomm.com/) for hosting the event!
This NetSquared event is part of TechSoup’s storytelling campaign, Storymakers 2016 (http://www.techsoup.org/community/community-initiatives/storymakers-resources), which is focused on building capacity for NGOs to use storytelling to create assets for fundraising and advocacy. TechSoup will be announcing its annual competition shortly, and we encourage everyone to consider submitting a video.
