Learn about "Extreme OLAP engine for Hadoop - Kylin", which eBay recently Open sourced and is now an Apache Incubator Project

Kylin is eBay’s open source Data Analytics solution on Hadoop, providing smarter Analytics on petabyte scale data at sub second latency. Kylin’s pre-built MOLAP cubes, distributed architecture, and high concurrency helps users analyze multidimensional queries using Kylin’s SQL interface as well as via other BI tools like Tableau and Microstrategy. Kylin is successfully deployed and used in eBay for a variety of production use cases, including web traffic analysis and geographical expansion analysis. It was open sourced on Oct 1, 2014 and has 320 stars and 125 forks.

Kylin has been accepted as Apache Incubator Project on Nov 25, 2014.

Brief bio of the Presenters

Yang Li - Technical Lead of Kylin - Yang Li joined eBay, Shanghai in Jan 2014 as a Member of Technical Staff and has been an architect and key developer of Kylin OLAP Engine. He leads the Kylin team in Shanghai, helping in the development of the road map and features that extend the usability across different use cases. Prior to joining eBay, Yang spent 8 years with IBM and 2 years with Morgan Stanley. At IBM, Yang was focused on core Java library (Apache Harmony), J2EE, and Big Data engineering development. He was the technical lead of IBM User Technologies and won Outstanding Technical Achievement Award in 2008.

Luke Han – Product Manager of Kylin - Luke Han joined eBay in late 2011 as a staff BI architect in the Business Intelligence platform team for eBay Inc. During the first two years, Luke was focused on BI Platform engineering, architecture, operations, and management. Later, Luke managed the evolution of the Kylin product as the Hadoop analytics solution. Luke played the roles of Product Owner and Developer from the beginning, helping drive the vision, road map, feature set, planning and delivery, and working very closely with US stakeholders. Luke is currently the Product Manager of Kylin.

Julian Hyde — Lead developer of Apache Calcite and Pentaho Mondrian; Apache Drill committer; Architect at Hortonworks. Previously a database kernel developer at Oracle, SQLstream, and Pentaho. Interested in open source, query optimization, and architecture of relational and non-relational databases.

Ankur Bansal — Ankur is a developer in eBay's Cloud & Data Platforms group, working on unique problems that eBay’s scale bring. He is very passionate about Cloud Engineering, Hadoop Ecosystem, and Distributed computing. Ankur is currently building a solution for real-time data streaming and contributing to extreme OLAP engine, Kylin.
