The biggest problem in relationships is the inability to communicate empathetically. Since most people are never taught this form of communication, they fall into one of the three traps of communication:

1. They do not express their needs. Expecting partners to be mind readers is guaranteed to have unfulfilled needs. This form of non-communication results in frustration, emotional outbursts, and relationship damage.
2. They express their needs as demands. Expressing needs as demands invites resistance. When both the demand and the resistance persist, they create bitterness, power struggles, and loss of love.
3. They do not listen to their partner's needs. Successful relationships require the skill of listening. When people don't listen, their partners become frustrated because the relationship fails to fulfill its basic purpose.
