MobX for State Management

In this talk, you'll learn some basics about MobX and what it brings to the table, how to get started with it, and hopefully whether or not you'll be wanting to learn more and adopt it for your next work or side project.

Every app has different requirements, sometimes they are well known and sometimes we learn them as we go. When it comes to managing state often a choice like Redux is made "just in case" and ends up being too heavy-duty for the lifetime of the project. Sometimes it goes the other way, with local state and HoCs on a prototype that actually (surprise!) is now your production app and also a nightmare to add more pages and features too.

Mobx is a battle-tested library that makes state management simple and scalable. It is un-opinionated, flexible, and almost completely un-intrusive. There are no silver bullets in what we do, but it never hurts to have more tools available.

React In A Design Process

Chris will walk us through the design process at Direct Supply, from prototyping to development. After sketching ideas to implement ing clickable, realistic prototypes using Storybook to testing how users try to use the ideas. He will discuss techniques that help the backend devs be successful using React -- topics include debugging, "ducks," and functional CSS.

Meet our speakers

Leo is a web developer at Northwestern Mutual's Digital Innovation Team with over a decade of professional experience and almost as many years of hobbyist Moxy. He's worked or dabbled with just about every front-end framework to some degree, from the Backbone and Knockout days to the React and Vue landscape of today. He believes that you can't say you hate something if you haven't tried it so he likes to try as many things as possible.

When not working on front-end code his heart is with dotnet and C#, but node.js and php are also close friends when needed. When not programming, Leo is an avid nerd and runs several campaigns of tabletop games for friends in the Pathfinder 2.0, D&D and Shadowrun settings.
