Zurihac Trip Report & The Art of Editing

Details

Talk #1 Zurihac Trip Report
Speaker: FPBrno community members
Abstract: FPBrno members attended Zurihac. The biggest Haskell hackaton in the world. 3 days of Haskell hacking, great keynotes and socializing. Hear about our experiences, what it was all about, see some photos and hear interesting stories.

Talk #2 The Art of Editing
Speaker: Marek Bernát. Marek is an FP veteran with Haskell and Clojure experience, with almost pansophic knowledge of the computer world and interest far transcending it.
Abstract: As programmers, we spend an awful lot of time with code editors. This is not surprising, the code is what we read and code is what we write. But it is shocking that we have no decent theory of what constitutes a good editor. What are the activities that programmers need the most help with and what are the best ways of helping them?

Let me pose a few questions. Does your editor

  • help you discover libraries that provide the functionality you need?
  • help you navigate and understand new code base?
  • explain how to use the language you're learning?
  • provide you with useful suggestions to resolve errors?
  • let you quickly run any piece of code and visualize its effects?
  • make sure you never make a syntactic error?

I'm going to talk about some novel projects that try to tackle some of these problems (Unison, Observable) and even put editing on solid theoretical ground (Hazel, Subtext). If I'm feeling lucky I might even try live coding with them.
