Art & Nature: Horse Sanctuary Hosting Open House Near Gilbert Stuart Museum

Details

***UPDATE: The Horseplay Open House on June 5 is cancelled due to rain forcast. It is rescheduled for June 26. (I will repost on Meetup in the days ahead.) It may still be a great day to visit the Gilbert Stuart Museum. See below for details.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Visit Horseplay, a nonprofit horse rescue sanctuary, for its annual Open House to help abused, neglected, and unwanted horses.

This is a wonderful opportunity for photographers or anyone interested in utilizing their snapshots as inspiration and reference material for hand-drawn artwork. Or if you just love nature and horses please come for this very special Sunday afternoon out in the country.

If you enjoy drawing in a lively atmosphere you may also want to bring along a sketchpad to capture some quick renderings as horses and people move about and interact.

To benefit the 25 horses in-residence there will be raffle prizes, silent auctions, food, drink, meet-n-greet the horses, live music, vendors (jewelry, herbal products, horsey stuff, crafts, and more). Demos include Intro to Evolutionary Horsemanship, De-mystifying Natural Horsemanship methods, Barefoot Trimming, Liberty Playing, and more.

Horseplay Founder and President Deidre Sharp is an amazing lady with a storied background who has been rescuing horses destined for slaughter for quite some time. I contacted Deidre and she said she would love to have a group of photographers and artists attend the event and that she welcomes photo submissions for Horseplay's upcoming calendar.

This will be a lovely day out to meet Deidre and help save these precious and beautiful animals. Members of R.I. Photo Safari Meetup Group will also be there. (Note: Rain-date for this event is June 26.)

Gilbert Stuart Museum

While you are in the area you may also enjoy taking a step back in time and stop by one of Rhode Island's best kept treasures, the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum at 815 Gilbert Stuart Road, Saunderstown, RI. The museum will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Gilbert Stuart was one of 18th century America’s master portrait artists. Stuart is best known for his unfinished Athenaeum portrait of George Washington. This is the image seen on the U.S. one dollar bill.
