Japanese Sashiko embroidery

Details

Sashiko is a Japanese embroidery style with fascinating geometrical patterns made by running stitch traditionally to a dark blue fabric with a white thread – but you can be creative and use other colors too.

I will tell you a little bit about the history of Sashiko and show the basic techniques. I'll give you lot of ideas, inspiration and I also offer many patterns to start your own work. Or if you want, I help you to create your own design.

You will make (or at least start) an own, unique embroidery work: it can be just a patch for practice or a small product (like a pouch, a pillow case, a pin cushion or a card case). You'll learn how to transfer the pattern on the fabric, how to stitch and also how to finish the work. You can join the Finishing embroidery workshop on 17.1. and finish what you start today.

You can also bring your own materials, if you have something special in mind. This technique was originally used for repairing and strengthen old clothes so if you have for example worn out jeans you want to mend, be sustainable and bring them with!

You are welcome even though you haven't done any embroidery before – I'll help you to get started. And for those who already have some experience: the technique looks simple, but I'm sure we can find you some challenges!

The course is led by Helka Mäki, qualified textile handicrafts teacher from Finland. I teach in English, but I can also guide in Finnish and limited German.

Cost: CHF 60 (All materials are included in the course fee: needle, fabric and embroidery threads).

The workshop is located in Social Fabric's new Atelier at Eichstrasse 29, Zurich. There are a limited number of 8 spots for this course, so sign up in advance to guarantee a spot. To reserve your spot, RSVP here (or through Social Fabric) AND make a bank transfer for the full amount of CHF 60 to Social Fabric's bank account: the IBAN is CH34 0900 0000 8985 8551 5 and the official business name is Amity Textile Arts, address Viaduktstrasse 93, 8005 Zürich.
