Open Data, Open Tools: Transforming IoT, LocationTech & Science

Details

Join us for an evening of great talks on how open data and open source tools are transforming technology especially the high-growth fields of location technology, internet of things and scientific domains.

Agenda

6:00 - 6:30pm - Networking / Food / Drinks

6:30 - 6:45pm - Welcome & Introductions

• Welcome Tracy Miranda, Kichwa Coders

• Welcome Gen Ashley, Women Who Code London Director

• Introduction to Geovation Alex Wrottesley, Geovation Hub

6:45 - 7:30pm - Talks

• Eclipse Geotrellis, JTS & Apache Spark in Action , Dr. Kari Dempsey, UK Hydrographic Office

Eclipse Geotrellis is is a geographic data processing engine for high performance applications. Eclipse JTS Topology Suite is an open source Java software library for processing vector geometry. Apache Spark is an open source cluster computing framework. This talk outlines how these technologies are being used together at the UK Hydrographic Office to map the world's oceans.

• Indoor routing with QGIS and pgRouting, Tim Manners, Ordnance Survey

This talk looks at indoor routing concepts using QGis and pgRouting. Using open source software tools this talk demonstrates how to create an internal routing network in 3D.

• Data is the New Currency, Dr. Monica Horten, Visiting Fellow at LSE

With the growth of big data processing and data profiling techniques, our data has never been so valuable. In this talk Dr. Monica Horten gives us some insight into data from a political perspective: how laws are evolving, corporate lobbying and the privacy paradox.

7:30 - 7:45pm -

Break

7:45 - 8:45pm - Talks

• Open Source & Eclipse Community, Thea Clay, Eclipse Foundation

Insights into open source at the Eclipse community & the working groups.

• Eclipse January for Scientific Big Data Analysis, Mark Basham, Diamond Light Source

Eclipse January is a set of standardized Java-based numerical data structures for scientific computing. This talk examines the library and how it provides the foundation for big data analysis of scientific experiments at the UK's synchrotron Diamond Light Source.

• Open Data, Augmented Reality & Mars , Layla Gordon, Ordnance Survey

This talk looks at how open data from NASA was used by the Ordnance Survey to create an Augmented Reality experience of the surface of Mars, a venture truly out of this world!

8.45 - 9:00pm -

Wrap up & Quiz

This event is generously sponsored by the Geovation Hub & Ordnance Survey.

This Eclipse event is focused on the collaborative working groups within the Eclipse open source community:

• LocationTech (https://www.locationtech.org/)
