Growing Community, Food, and Livelihood in the City (Weekend workshop with Toby Hemenway) November 2nd and 3rd, 2013
Toby Hemenway is the author of Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture, which for the last seven years has been the best-selling permaculture book in the world. He has been an adjunct professor at Portland State University, Scholar-in-Residence at Pacific University, and is currently a field director at the Permaculture Institute (USA). Toby has presented lectures and workshops at major sustainability conferences such as Bioneers, SolFest, and EcoFarm, and at Duke University, Tufts University, University of Minnesota, University of Delaware and many other educational venues. His writing has appeared in magazines such as Whole Earth Review, Natural Home, and Kitchen Gardener. He has contributed book chapters for WorldWatch Institute and to several publications on ecological design.
Urban Permaculture Methods for A Fear-Free Future!
How can we create resilient, regenerative cities and suburbs? Permaculture, an ecological approach to design, shows us how. Though land may be limited, cities are rich in other resources, especially social capital. This workshop will show how to find, harvest, and integrate the many resources in our cities in sustainable ways. Topics include:
• Urban permaculture principles and design methods
• Access to land for growing food
• Strategies and methods for urban food production including city food-forest design and urban livestock
• Developing the urban foodshed and building local food systems in your area
• Urban ecology, both biological and social
• Energy and water security in urban areas
• Creating public and community space in neighborhoods
• Greening your personal economy and finding right livelihood
• Building business guilds and local economic networks
• Implementing sustainable policies and working with local government
From this two-day workshop, you'll take home specific techniques and strategies for food production, resource security, and community resilience in metropolitan areas, and you'll learn new ways of thinking about these subjects. We'll see how permaculture's principles and design methods apply to the challenging yet rich environments of our cities and to the sprawling, car-requiring spaces in suburbia. You'll gain a grasp of urban permaculture that will let you take advantage of the special opportunities that cities and suburbs provide.

Sunday: Applying Urban Permaculture

Classes will run from 9:30am to 4:30pm Please arrive on time as we have much to cover in each session.
Prices: $220 for the weekend or $120 each day. $190 if paid in advance (by Oct. 1st 2013). This workshop is included in the Fall Permaculture design course and there is no extra cost to full PDC students.
