"As Educators, We Are Not Out Of Work Photographers, We Are Serious Photographers with A "Work Mission" - To Teach, And So I Have For Over Forty Years." R. Stromberg, 2010
Before You Spend Your Money...... Just Ask The Question
Around here, we like to think that as students progress through our programs, they actually learn something, they have real skills they can use throughout their life long learning.
That's why we say, " Before you give your time and money to a place (school), you should ask these questions:
How many of your students that start classes with you will learn enough to be in a show on your gallery walls? How much time does it take?
How many of your students have participated in one of your exhibits? In the past year, in the past five years?
What are the hours that your gallery is open?
Will I learn how to print? Will I learn how to make exhibition, "archival" prints?
Do you have on premises the printers necessary to make "exhibition" prints?
What are the hours for using the lab? Will there be someone to help me if the printer stops working?
What is your teacher-to-student ratio in the computer lab? Who pays for the paper that the printer uses? Do you charge for ink?
Will I learn how to "mount" prints? Will I learn how to cut mattes for show prints?
Will I learn how to frame prints?
Will I learn how to prepare walls for showing prints?
Do you have handouts with the lab instruction that I can refer to if I decide to buy my own printer and print at home?
Do you have an equipment-buying service to help me understand what equipment to buy and where the best prices are?
What kind of support do you offer after I have finished taking classes with you?
How many of your students go on to work in the photographic industry? Will you sell the photographs that I have on exhibit? What is your commission for selling the prints you sell?
Will I learn how to sell my work? How to sell my services?
Will I be able to rent computer lab time?
Do you have an "online" gallery? How does someone get their photographs on the "online" gallery? How long do the photographs stay "online"?
Our answer to each one of these questions is: YES!
No "Personal Philosophy" Of Cow Pies,
..... No Powerpoint or Slide Shows.
At Richard Stromberg's Chicago Photography Classes our only accent is on Learning. We won't try to sell you a "membership", caps or t-shirts with our logo on it. We won't ask you for contributions or charge you to attend a party - for a Shows Opening and no meaningless certificates.
We will, teach and work with you, to foster a safe community where you will learn something each time you walk through the door.
When You Attend Classes Here -
We Include "Photographic Thinking" In All Of Our Classes
And You Will Learn The "Language Of Photography"!
Are you going on vacation this year? Are last year’s photos not as exciting as the trip was? Richard Stromberg’s Photography Classes kick off New classes sessions every seven weeks beginning the week of Sunday, January 1st. All Year Long

If you’re serious about learning photography, this just might be the place for you. Start with our free, 90-minute workshop starting at High Noon on select Saturdays and each Sunday. Use our free camera-buying service and learn how to make the best camera purchase for your needs. Then join us for our seven-week classes, offered in Chicago, Oak Park and Park Ridge. We offer classes weekdays, weeknights and weekends.
Basic camera overview, operation,
and the principles of correct exposure
Often imitated but never equaled, Richard's Free 90 minute workshop was designed to teach people about their cameras and allow someone a picture of what Richard's classes are truly like. Starting at High Noon each Sunday, this energetic 90 minute workshop will keep your attention. A free notebook is provided for you to take notes. The only accent here is on learning.
If you have a new Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera, need a refresher or have never attended a photography class,
This Is The Free Workshop To Attend.
If you are thinking of purchasing a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) or Film (SLR) our camera experts will help you to understand what is important and what's not important in a DSLR camera, or a film SLR Camera - with interchangeable lenses. We know where the best prices are in the country, and if you want to save some money and buy a used camera, we know which ones to stay away from.
You will learn basic DSLR camera operation: an overview of your camera controls, use of your camera's exposure meter, a discussion about which lens is the best value. No worries if you have a film camera because those cameras are covered as well. Be sure to bring a camera as well as your camera manual if you have one. If you do not have a camera, don't worry, be happy, a camera will be provided for you to use during the workshop. Compare Richard's teaching with others and decide for yourself. Does Richard's 40 years of photographic thinking and teaching experience, make a difference?
Don't let high ceilings and large windows at other places fool you,
"IT'S WHAT HAPPENS IN THE CLASSROOM THAT COUNTS!"
Why are Classes Different at Chicago Photography Classes?
Why do you get more for your money here? What is value?
Is it all just about price? Well . . .NOT QUITE!
We don’t follow the “health club” business model. You know the one. They take your money up front, and if you don’t stick with it, that’s your problem. With Photo I, our first class is Free. Always. And if you don’t like the experience, No Salesperson Will Call. We don't fill our classrooms with as many people as the room will hold. No “coach” seating here, (three abreast, aisle in the middle). We include "Photographic Thinking" in all of our classes, no extra charge, (LOL). No slide shows of other peoples work either, our classes are about your work. The only person that ever learned anything from a slide show is the person that produced the slide show.
It's too easy to get lost in a large class. It's just human nature for an “artsy” teacher to gravitate to the brightest light in the room. It takes teaching experience and attention to detail to be sure everyone in the room "gets it.” For more than 30 years, our ratio of 1 teacher for every 5 students in our Labs, has been the most effective teaching model in Chicago and the Midwest. You are not just another body to help us meet our monthly nut. We pay close attention to each student, and if you’re having trouble “getting it,” we’ll spend as much time with you as necessary.
Our computer facilities are spacious, four feet of space for each work station, no cramming! Stop by to tour our facilities: two computer labs, with 26 computers (PCs and iMacs); a film darkroom; seven "best in class" archival Epson Printers, a Lighting Studio; large classrooms, with padded arm chairs on wheels; and our " With InSight Gallery”, http://www.chicagopho... where we have student shows twice a year. We provide all Photo I students with their own 50-sheet box of archival paper for their prints, with notebooks and handouts, at no additional charge. We have ample Free parking seven days a week. The Photo II & III students have 24-hour, seven-days-a-week access to our facilities.
You see, this is a community of people focused on learning and teaching Photography. No elitism, no attitude, no rules or restrictions that get in the way of learning. No “membership” fee. Finishing classes with Richard & his teachers will give you real skills to use on your journey of lifelong learning. Attend classes once a week with Richard and his colleagues, along with a weekly lab session, and in nine months you’ll be ready to participate in one of our group shows.
Our "With InSight Gallery", http://www.chicagopho ... , (located in Withinsight Hall, 4001 North Ravenswood Avenue) is not for others, our Gallery is for showcasing and selling our students work and the work of the teachers and Photographers in our unique community.
We don't have rigid hours. We stay as late as we need to after class and we open each day hours before the classes begin. Every student gets extra time if they need it. Richard is available to students seven days a week, at times that are convenient for you. Everyone gets Richard's cell phone number, (312-671-7717) and you may call or text him 24 hours a day. Richard even has someone answering his phone when he’s teaching. All prospective students are encouraged to attend our free 90-minute workshop, offered each weekend, before they sign up for classes. Our first Photo I class is free, regardless. No salesperson will call.
Life Long Chicagoan - Richard Stromberg, ( our vintage teacher) uses his 45 years of photography & teaching experience for the benefit of his students. Which camera to buy? Where to go for the best price? Which are the best lenses? Which are the best-used cameras and lenses, and how much should they cost? Do you really think you'll get your money's worth Downtown or on Lincoln Avenue?
In four decades, Richard has established the most recognized photo programs in Chicago and the Midwest, attracting more than 25,000 students. Each student receives about 40 hours of instruction per session which means that Richard has enabled over one million hours of instruction throughout the last 40 years. So Richard and his fellow teachers won't try to impress you. They’re here to teach you, to help you learn and grow and find your own unique artistic center. In Richard's classes, we help you make the world’s most important photographs. Yours
