Are you interested in joining or making Hackathons and/or Hackathon Workshops? We are getting ready to launch an innovative hackathon about hackathons but there's a lot more filling out of forms and planning details than you might expect that goes into making one.

Have you organized a Hackathon on DevPost before? We haven't, and as a team of volunteers for Filecoin Orbit, we are currently faced with the following email from DevPost after registering the Hackathon Hackathon (metaHackathon(0)) on DevPost:

1. Timing. What does the schedule look like? Do you have a date set?

  • We've got this currently as our schedule, but there's lots of flexible and changing components (such as when the Workshops, Teach Anything's (for Hackathons!), and Study Groups will happen).

2. Prizes. Virtual hackathons require well-written legal rules to protect the participants and organizers--especially if you are offering prizes. Do you have information on how many prizes you're looking to award winners?

  • We are still working on these details. At Hackathon Workshop Workshop #2, we will workshop the standard Filecoin/IPFS Judging Criteria into a suitable form for a hackathon about hackathons.
  • For example, in the metaHackathon, we may want to encourage (or even require!) the teams to submit something they have already submitted elsewhere (like a hackathon cool-down).

3. Projects. What do you hope or expect participants to build during the virtual hackathon?

  • Being clear about our intentions and expectations is important.
  • We'd like every workshop to have its own "mini-project" or "homework" that teams or individuals can complete.
  • We will have a few different tracks for people to hack on.
  • Broadly, we want people to build something that makes hackathons better.

4. Community. Do you have a community of developers to share this with?

  • Yes! We have developers, organizers, sponsors, developer advocates, and innocent bystanders looking forward to this. Many of them are in our Web3 Library Discord Server.
