Enchiridion
Details
The Handbook - A short manual of advice from Epictetus, compiled by Arrian. It is meant to help apply Stoic philosophy to daily life. This will be the first meeting of the group. It is a discussion of any of the "chapters" of the Enchiridion or Stoicism in general.
The Enchiridion, being ~2000 years old, was not written in English but has been translated and is freely available, a popular one being by Elizabeth Carter from around 1750. Another translation by George Long can be found here: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Encheiridion_of_Epictetus_(George_Long)
For a good introduction to Stoicism one can visit Massimo Pigliucci's Stoicism blog ( https://howtobeastoic.wordpress.com/stoicism-101/ ) or the resources page on The Stoic Fellowship (https://stoicfellowship.com/stoicism-resources.html). A search of the internet will bring up others who have something to say about Stoicism in a modern context. Or read the Enchiridion with no introduction and see what impressions arise .
The meeting location has been determined. Panera Bread on Shelburne Rd.
As for an agenda. Nothing too formal. I will have an introduction to Stoicism and the Enchiridion. Then we can discuss whatever chapters someone found interesting (they are short). Come with questions, opinions, and an open mind. We can also discuss Stoicism more broadly.
