The Riverside Atheists and Free Thinkers are excited to announce their first speaker in the 2015 speaker series!

Dr. Richard Carrier (http://www.richardcarrier.info/) will be coming out to Riverside to give a talk on his new book, On the Historicity of Jesus: Why We Might Have Reason to Doubt.

Richard Carrier is a world-renowned author and speaker. As a professional historian, published philosopher, and prominent defender of the American freethought movement, Dr. Carrier has appeared across the U.S., Canada and the U.K., and on American television and London radio, defending sound historical methods and the ethical worldview of secular naturalism. His books and articles have received international attention. With a Ph.D. from Columbia University in ancient history, he specializes in the intellectual history of Greece and Rome, particularly ancient philosophy, religion, and science, with emphasis on the origins of Christianity and the use and progress of science under the Roman empire. He is also a published expert in the modern philosophy of naturalism as a worldview. He is the author of On the Historicity of Jesus: Why We Might Have Reason for Doubt (http://www.richardcarrier.info/BooksbyRichardCarrier.html#OHJ), Proving History: Bayes’s Theorem and the Quest for the Historical Jesus (http://www.richardcarrier.info/BooksbyRichardCarrier.html#PH), Sense and Goodness without God (http://www.richardcarrier.info/BooksbyRichardCarrier.html#SAG), Not the Impossible Faith (http://www.richardcarrier.info/BooksbyRichardCarrier.html#NIF), Why I Am Not a Christian (http://www.richardcarrier.info/BooksbyRichardCarrier.html#WNC), and Hitler Homer Bible Christ (http://www.richardcarrier.info/BooksbyRichardCarrier.html#HHBC), and a major contributor to The Empty Tomb (http://www.richardcarrier.info/BooksbyRichardCarrier.html#TET), The Christian Delusion (http://www.richardcarrier.info/BooksbyRichardCarrier.html#TCD), The End of Christianity (http://www.richardcarrier.info/BooksbyRichardCarrier.html#TEC), and Christianity Is Not Great (http://www.richardcarrier.info/BooksbyRichardCarrier.html#CNG), and for his copious work in history and philosophy, online and in print. He is currently teaching affordable online courses in secular philosophy, history, and methodology at Partners for Secular Activism (http://secularactivism.org/?cat=11), and working on his next books, Science Education in the Early Roman Empire and The Scientist in the Early Roman Empire.

Dr. Richard Carrier’s new groundbreaking book On the Historicity of Jesus: Why We Might Have Reason for Doubt (http://www.richardcarrier.info/BooksbyRichardCarrier.html) is the first book extensively challenging the historicity of Jesus to be published by a peer reviewed academic press (through the University of Sheffield). He has also published several peer reviewed academic papers on the subject, which are now reprinted (along with many other papers of interest) in his other new book, Hitler Homer Bible Christ. His related book, Proving History: Bayes’s Theorem and the Quest for the Historical Jesus, had already demonstrated the invalidity of the methods used to argue for historical facts about Jesus, and presented a more reliable and testable way to argue for facts in history. All three books will be available for purchase at the event, at which Carrier will summarize the reasons we have to suspect Jesus never existed as a historical man but was always imaginary. He will then answer questions from the audience. A lot of what has been said on this subject in the past is flawed or inaccurate or outright untrue. Applying his Ph.D. in ancient history from Columbia University, Dr. Carrier has extensively studied which claims we can trust, and which not, making this a unique opportunity for anyone who wants to find out what holds up, and what doesn't, in the debate over the historicity of Jesus.
