Beautiful Music and Wonderful Art for free
Details
Let’s start with some beautiful classical music at St James’s Piccadilly where we will see a short four hand piano recital with works by Dvorak, Mozart and Bizet presented by Lucas Saraiva Cunha (piano) & Alique Khambatta (piano).
Both of these musicians have won numerous awards and performed widely across the UK and internationally, appearing at contemporary music festivals, in broadcast performances, and in concerts. The concerts last from 50 minutes to one hour.
Please note, that whilst the concert is free, donations can be made in cash in the basket on your way out, or by tap donation. It is hoped that you will support the event by giving a donation of some amount.
Following the concert, we will take a short walking tour of a couple of the best of the small commercial galleries in the area.
We will first visit the Charles Burnand Gallery to see an unusual exhibition entitled Under Wraps. It is unusual in that the exhibition transforms the act of unveiling into part of the exhibition itself, with significant new works revealed through a sequence of automated unveilings. In this way, rather than presenting works as finished objects awaiting admiration, Under Wraps turns the moment of revelation into an act in its own right. Selected pieces remain veiled beneath semi-translucent architectural sheeting, their forms only partially discernible, before being revealed through a carefully choreographed sequence of automated unveilings.
After that, we will visit another gallery that have two exhibitions on, the first by Cindy Sherman and the second by Lorna Simpson. Both look excellent.
There is no charge from the galleries to view the exhibitions.
After the second event, for those who want, we can go for a drink or tea or snack and discuss the day and what we have seen and heard. Sotheby's has in the past proved popular with the group for tea, and if possible, we will go there again (and visit there display for a short time).
As always, please only sign up if you are intending to attend. Non-attendance, particularly without explanation is likely to lead to removal from the group.
We are changing a £2.50 fee to help cover Meetup fees that the Group has to pay. The £2.50 is non-refundable, even if you cancel and Meetup will also charge you a small amount on top which does not come to the group. If we have to cancel the event for bad weather or other reasons beyond our control, then your £2.50 will be brought forward as a credit against a future event as refunds are all but impossible to manage.
We would appreciate it if you cancelled no later than 2 days before the event and to please avoid cancelling on the day.
We are meeting in front of the Church railings on Piccadilly itself. We will be leaving there at 12.45 to join the queue to get into the music. Once we are on the move you will not find us. Therefore, please arrive a little before the leave time. If you want to eat before the concert, there is usually a street food market in front of the church. Please arrive early if you do eat, so you are ready to meet the group at 12.45. We will not be stopping for food until we go to tea at the end.
