WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
Alright!
Floor work. With a hoop.
…why not?
But here’s why ...beyond that it’s ridiculously awesome:
The usage of the hoop as a teacher -toward increased dynamism and fluidity- both deeply internalized and expanded through space.
...I think the vortex provided by the hoop's momentum has a unique way of initiating and deeply informing the waves and spirals already inherent to the body’s capacity. Old news. But most recently I’ve been exploring a variety of contemporary dance principles toward honing the elements that may optimize this potential and then even expand the breadth of that space.
Enter the floor...
In some ways, I just wanted to fall. And have. Constantly.
But through that, I’ve discovered that not only does addressing the floor give greater range to our expanse of expressive movement, but that some of the best tools for this deepening of exchange and fluid learning are available through it. Not to accomplish shit-hot movements DESPITE the hoop as an obstacle, but still maintaining it’s value as an integral asset to that movement. There are actually ride-able waves TO the floor, and while on the floor, and while leaving the floor. They were the missing piece I'd been waiting for and here they are.
So here we are...
In class we'll be covering: a variety of spins while on the floor, crawls, approaching the floor and leaving the floor with two varying hoop orientations (coin/vertical and horizontal), how to interchange those orientations, the seated position, full back position... and a couple of shit-hot zingers i found along the way.
Don't worry!
You CAN do this. The movement study from which I developed most of my floor-hoop understanding is one based entirely on safety and personal exploration rather than natural athleticism. I’m not certified or anything, but for really reals: you’ll be fine.
…and it’s still ridiculously awesome.
