Dreamups (http://www.dreamups.org) and Staten Island MakerSpace (http://www.simakerspace.com) are hosting a weekend hackathon to build open hardware technologies that have a social or environmental impact on April 11 through 13, 2014.
Participants are invited to register for a weekend building challenge and pitch an idea or design for a product or technology that has social or environmental positive impact.
Up to five projects will be chosen by the group of participants, based on feasibility and potential impact, and prototypes will be built by teams formed out of the group of participants over the course of the weekend.
Participants will have access to the Staten Island MakerSpace facility and equipment, including fully equipped metal and wood shops. Techs will be on hand to help with building. Teams will be given a small budget to purchase needed supplies.
Projects that organizers are looking for people to bring to the table include but are not limited to:Water filtration systems, indoor and urban gardening solutions, waste management, solar, wind and other
renewable energy projects, portable cooking and/or heating solutions, creative construction methods and design,
portable shelters, alternative transportation, prosthetic devices, and whatever else you can Dreamup.
Projects made over the weekend will be featured on http://www.dreamups.org and offered as open source technology to a worldwide audience. Individuals and communities worldwide then have access to these prototyped designs and are encouraged to reproduce, use and improve them
with the idea that shared knowledge empowers people and improves our local and global communities.
To Register for NYC Dreamups Lab
● Participants can register at
http://www.eventbrite.com/e/dreamups-lab-nyc-tickets-10591187527
● Registration fee is $25 per person
● Participants must be age 16 and up
● All participants must sign an insurance waiver and participants under 18 must have
parental waiver.
Participants are not required to bring a project idea, but are encouraged to do so. Designs can be in the form of sketches, drawings, CAD files, or other means of presenting a prototype idea. Participants do not have to have any experience in design or engineering.
Your idea doesn't have to be fancy, high tech, or completely realized. It just has to be an interesting idea. Teams can help design and refine the prototypes as they are built. Staten
Island MakerSpace has large chalkboards and whiteboards for people to sketch out plans on a large scale. People who would like to participate as builders and not as designers are welcome to register as well. Techs will be on hand to help with fabrication, so participants should not worry about not being able to weld, for instance.
● Team budgets will be about $200 for materials. More, if sponsors are generous.
● Participants will have access to some steel and wood donated by New York Custom
Fabricators and American Tube & Supply Co.
● Hand tools and all equipment will be supplied by SI MakerSpace.
● Registered participants can make an appointment to visit the SI MakerSpace and see
available materials and equipment prior to the event.
● Participants can also bring specialized materials for their project if needed.
